Ruhmkorff coil

A Journey to the Centre of the Earth

The Ruhmkorff coil is the expedition’s electric lighting apparatus, a practical instrument whose fate marks the shift from planned exploration to helpless passage through a violent underground current. First treated as equipment to be checked before entering a dark gallery, it is later destroyed in an explosion; once its light is gone, the travelers depend on Hans’s lantern and the limited flame it can sustain in the rushing air.

Equipment and Intended Use

The coil belongs to the expedition’s carefully prepared instruments and remains important well into the underground journey. Before the travelers enter a new gallery, Professor Hardwigg checks that it is functioning, anticipating that it will soon be needed. Its role is therefore not decorative: electric light is part of the practical means by which the party expects to inspect and traverse the passage.

That inspection takes place while the raft is securely fastened to a rock, near a nearly circular opening about five feet across. The gallery runs through living rock, with its interior coated by material that had once passed through it in a molten state; its lower edge lies level with the water, allowing the party to enter. The coil is checked at this threshold, before the passage’s blocked route and the later catastrophe overturn the expedition’s orderly preparations.

Destruction in the Flood

The coil’s decisive appearance comes after an explosion sweeps the travelers and their raft into an underground flood. They are carried violently through a widening gallery, jolted against its rocky sides and unable to control their course. In that turbulence, the last remains of the electric apparatus are destroyed.

The loss has an immediate practical consequence. Lighting a torch is impossible in the rushing current, and the party can no longer rely on its electric machine to illuminate the way. Yet the darkness is not complete: Hans manages to light a lantern. Its flame flickers and nearly goes out in the fierce draft, but it gives enough light to reveal that the gallery is broad and the water is driving them forward with extraordinary force.

Narrative Significance

The coil traces the limits of equipment against an environment that the expedition cannot command. Before the flood, it is an object to inspect in anticipation of future need; amid the torrent, it becomes wreckage, and the party’s technical provision gives way to Hans’s resourcefulness with a lantern. The change is more than a loss of illumination: it dramatizes how quickly a carefully equipped scientific expedition can be reduced to endurance, partial visibility, and dependence on immediate human skill.
